Tekla has loved animals- especially dogs and horses her entire life. Tekla got into dogs after realizing horses, and especially showing them, was too expensive. She knew she wanted to show dogs and after seeing an English Springer Spaniel ready to show, she was hooked on the breed. Tekla has bred and shown her English Springer Spaniels under the Dartek prefix and her dogs have won at all breed shows, specialty shows, and the national specialty. While her main focus has been in the conformation ring, Tekla's philosophy on breeding is: First the dogs have to be healthy and be structurally sound. Equally as important, is their temperament. They need to be sweet with people and dogs, as well as confident and happy, so they are easy to live with. Tekla's dogs are pets first and show dogs second.
Tekla has always believed Obedience training is equally important. She has competed in Obedience, Rally, and Agility with her dogs. In 1985, her first Springer was a Champion and earned his CD. Today her current dogs are Champions and have Rally titles and are working towards other titles!
Besides training, Tekla really enjoys teaching classes. She loves watching dogs and their owners improve skills, become a team, and develop great relationships in life. Over the years, Tekla has taught Obedience and Puppy classes in Austin, Albert Lea, and Rochester, MN.
Tekla enjoys attending seminars, taking classes, and learning from other trainers to continuously improve her skills. She thinks it is important to keep an open mind toward learning. We can learn from anyone- other trainers, students, and always the dogs! This philosophy is one she uses to help her own dogs, but her students as well.
